"Westminster Abbey 2011" a miniature by Elena Baranoff nominated for the Gold Memorial Bowl
LONDON-October 2011, Mall Galleries
The beautiful miniature, Westminster Abbey 2011, was nominated for the Gold Memorial Bowl and awarded the Gold Memorial Bowl Honorable Mention, one of the most prestigious honors in the world of miniature art, by the Royal Miniature Society. The exhibition was opened and awards were presented by Dr. Steven Lloyd, Senior Director of Pictures, Bonhams, Scotland. The creation of the portrait of Westminster Abbey was inspired by the mesmerizing Royal Wedding Ceremony of Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Original sketches from my many visits to London served as the basis of the creation of the miniature treasure. Painted in egg tempera on vellum, the architectural portrait celebrates the historic event of the 21st century. The award winning painting was exhibited at the Mall Galleries during the month of October, 2011.

Portrait of Sotheby's Deputy Chairman Lord Mark Poltimore created by Elena Baranoff exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery
LONDON- June 2009, National Portrait Gallery
The National Portrait Gallery exhibited a portrait of The Right Honourable The Lord Poltimore, Deputy Chairman Sotheby's Europe and Chairman Sotheby's Russia, painted by fine artist Elena Baranoff. The portrait was unveiled to the public for the very first time as part of the BP Portrait Exhibition held at the National Portrait Gallery from June 18-September 20, 2009, later travelling on tour to Southampton City Art Gallery and the Dean Gallery of the National Galleries of Scotland in Edinburgh. Elena Baranoff was inspired to paint a portrait of Lord Poltimore after attending the fine art auctions during the Winter Russian Art Week at Sotheby's in London. The official sittings took place at Sotheby's New Bond Street during the early months of 2009. "Lord Poltimore's elegance and artistic ability to engage and control the auction process was inspiring" said the artist "In my portrait I wished to capture the unique spirit of the legendary auctioneer." The portrait harmoniously combines modern flare and classic elegance with its dramatic lighting, deep dark background and rich colors. The artist's highly innovative painting technique, developed with years of experimentation and experience, makes this work of art all the more unique. The portrait was painted on a marble gesso panel in timeless egg tempera, using rare pigments as lapis lazuli and malachite, all natural dry colors which the artist hand prepares using a recipe passed down by generations of icon painters.
